Bridgeport, West Virginia - Comprehensive Plan
Compass Point Planning and E.L. Robinson Engineering teamed together to assist the City of Bridgeport in updating the city’s comprehensive plan. The City of Bridgeport is located in the heart of northern West Virginia and is one of the few communities to see a significant increase in population over the last decade, having grown over 10 percent since 2000 while the surrounding communities lost population. Bridgeport is the location of the state’s first master planned community (Charles Pointe), has recently attracted a major regional hospital, is in close proximity to the FBI’s National Crime Information Center, and is the site of the North Central West Virginia Airport with the state’s longest airport runway. All of this activity has led to significant changes in issues and priorities for the community, which ultimately resulted in a need to update the comprehensive plan. Due to the short project timeframe, the team undertook a planning charrette process for the community resulting in the development of a conceptual land use plan for the city and surrounding areas. The consulting team introduced unique strategies for encouraging new housing options that will meet the demand for smaller homes, compact development, and more affordable/workforce housing. The plan was adopted in March 2013.
